As a fifth of Girls Aloud, one of the biggest girl bands of our time, Nadine Coyle is used to the spotlight. Her time since the band, hasn’t been spent twiddling her thumbs or shying away from the craft that has made her a household name.

Nadine is back with a new EP and a UK and Ireland tour. She will be bringing with her new material and for any Girls Aloud fans, the voice of the band will be taking some of their legendary hits back on tour. We joined Nadine in London to catch up and discuss possible reunions and girl power.

Congratulations on the release of Girls on Fire, it’s so exciting for you!

Thank you, it took so long to get to this point, then when it does you don’t know what to do with yourself.

How does your sound differ now to what we have previously heard from you?

My voice has changed a lot. So that sounds different to some of the older songs like the Girls Aloud tracks. I sound so young in comparison, so that’s changed and also the content. It’s about really strong women, the really empowering ‘never the victim’ just kind. I love writing songs about that, this is definitely one for feeling good about yourself.

I got that from Go To Work, it was such a good feel good tune for the girls, what can we expect from your EP?

There’s a song coming out in two weeks called Gossip and is a total different style than Girls On Fire or Go To Work. It’s really laid back, it’s more reflective, not deeper but more reflective. We will keep releasing a song every two weeks and just see how quickly we can turn songs around and get them out there.

After bursting back into our lives last year with the infectious ‘Go To Work’, the Nadine Coyle solo train is officially gathering steam with the release of her equally anthemic new single ‘Girls On Fire’.

Forget what Cheryl, Nicola and co. have released over the years: Nadine’s blistering brand of pop is closest you’ll get to the iconic off-the-wall sound that Girls Aloud cultivated so expertly during their 10 years together – which is just as well considering that some of the band’s staple classics will be getting a long overdue showing on stage alongside Nadine’s new solo material when the 32-year-old tours the UK and Ireland in May.

As gay men across the country add ‘Girls On Fire’ to their pre-Saturday night playlists, Attitude’s Will Stroude caught up with Nadine to find out more about her upcoming EP, which Girls Aloud tracks definitely won’t be getting another airing this spring, and why she might just end up becoming the “new Kris Jenner”…

Hi Nadine! You must be having a very busy week – how’s it all going?

It’s going really good! I try not to think about it because you can get yourself overexcited.

‘Girls On Fire’ is out today, we’ve got the EP coming and now you’ve announced a tour – how long have you been sitting on all this news?

It’s been a while! The plan was also to do ‘Go To Work’, get everything back up and going again and reintroduce. ‘Girls On Fire’ is bit heavier – when you hear it first you go ‘What on earth is she doing?!’ It comes nicely after ‘Go To Work’ I think. And the tour is something I always really love doing, so it was natural to just go back into that. Get back on stage, strut around – why not?!

As you say, ‘Girls On Fire’ is definitely a bold choice of single. What was the inspiration behind it?

Well ‘Girls On Fire’ is very, very sassy. It’s very much, ‘We can do whatever we want’, speaking from a position of power. I don’t like to write or be involved with songs that make anybody a victim. No victims around here! So we’ve made something that’s really powerful. When you’re listening to it, it can make your heart speed up, like you’ve had too much coffee. It’s one of those songs. It’s a really belter too, you’ve got to really clear your throat and get ready. I just want people to hear it and enjoy it.

Yesterday, Nadine did a brilliant live interview for BUILD Series LDN. Fans got to go and watch and those of us at home were able to stream it live, and ask questions on social media.

A few things we found out in this interview:

  • She hates Beautiful Cause You Love Me for encouraging low self-esteem.
  • After Girls On Fire release, we will get another new song Gossip in a few weeks
  • There’s talks of a possible reality show with her Father
  • Her daughter Anaiya is her own boss!
  • She loves Derry Girls
  • Shes open to suggestions for songs to sing on her tour.

I’ve also added some pictures to the gallery.

Nadine’s new single ‘Girls on Fire‘ will be released this Thursday 8th February.

The single is part of a 4 track EP that will be out in April.

The collection, which also features recent single Go To Work, has been helmed by Girls Aloud’s production house Xenomania and is described as a collection “celebrating strong women”. It’s probably about as close to another Girls Aloud album as we’re ever going to get.

Nadine has announced details of a mini UK tour today! She will be taking her 4 track EP plus all the Girls Aloud classics, on tour in May.
